6 First Dance Tips for Your Wedding Day

1) After you say "I do" step aside and practice a few of your moves

If you can, while guests are at cocktail hour or distracted with another activity, disappear to a place where you won't be bothered and practice some of your moves. It helps to practice in the actual clothes you'll be wearing on the dance floor since we probably didn't get to do this in lessons. If you don’t have the opportunity to dance while no one is watching, you can try a spin or a dip while you’re taking photos as a way to try out your moves before the first dance. Dance moves also make for some really fun and creative photos!

2) Remember to assign someone you trust with video duty

If you don’t have an official videographer (or even if you do), make sure to assign a friend or family member video duty for your first dance. You’re going to want to see how awesome you look dancing all your new moves!

3) Say something encouraging to one another before you get on the dance floor

A simple "we got this" or "you're a great dancer" can make a world of difference if your partner is feeling nervous before stepping out to do your first dance. Remind each other how hard you've worked on this and that you CAN do this. Together as a team!

4) Deep breaths!

Take a few slow, deep breaths before you walk onto the floor, and keep that going throughout the dance. We all have a tendency to speed up when we're nervous, and deep breathing will keep you calm (and on time) through the whole thing.

5) Smile and just keep going, no matter what

Missteps happen, so don't sweat it! Your guests will have no idea if you make a mistake during your first dance, so don't give it away! Instead, just keep smiling and keep dancing. And remember, the leader is responsible to get you back on track, so followers, don't try to take over - just wait for the leader's guidance.

6) Be proud of yourselves

No matter what happens on the dance floor during your first dance, be proud of this challenge that you tackled TOGETHER! You just danced in front of all of your friends and family. Mission accomplished. Cheers to you!
